Monkeypox Virus Questions & Answers for Family Physicians: Highlights from an AAFP Conversation
PatientCare (Jul. 26, 2022) – Monkeypox virus (MPV) cases in the United States numbered 3487 as of July 25, 2022, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
They are widely distributed with the 5 largest case counts currently in New York (990), California (356), Illinois (344), Florida (273), and Georgia (268). The CDC says that 99% of cases are related to male-to-male sexual contact.
The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) recently launched an informational webpage for FPs offering guidance on the outbreak and clinical aspects of the virus. AAFP also just interviewed public health expert Jonathan Temte, MD, PhD, MS, on many of the same topics.
Temte is associate dean for public health and community engagement and professor in the department of family medicine and community health at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health. Temte is past chair of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices of the CDC.
